HIV/AIDS is a challenge to Medical Sciences, Society and Global
Economy. Estimate of 5.2 million being HIV positive in India is
a cause of concern. Maharashtra is one of the High Prevalence States
for HIV infection in India. This challenge is addressed in Maharashtra
by various agencies and organizations. Maharashtra State AIDS Control
Society (MSACS), Avert Society and Mumbai Districts AIDS Control
Society (MDACS) are agencies of Government of Maharashtra and Municipal
Corporation of Greater Mumbai that operate in tandem to implement
the National AIDS Control Program with the help of various partners.
Avert Society is registered under Societies Registration Act, 1860
and is a Public Trust registered with the Charity Commissioner in
Maharashtra State (India). It is funded and jointly administered
by Government of Maharashtra, National AIDS Control Organization
(NACO) and the United States Agency for International Development
(USAID|India). It is engaged in reducing the transmission of STD/
HIV/AIDS and related infectious diseases and mitigating their impact.
A challenge of this nature can be met only by people and organizations
working for a common cause with a defined strategy and multilateral
co-operation.
