Communication Program
Avert Society in collaboration with various partners developed
a detailed HIV communication plan for Maharashtra State. The
strategic communication plan included three distinct integrated
components - Advocacy, Behaviour Change Communication
and Social Mobilisation.
Advocacy is aimed at national and
district/municipal decision makers, to increase political support,
raise human and financial resources and to speed the change of
supportive policies and legislation, as well as services at the state
and national level.
Behaviour Change Communication,
including the development of positive behaviour in children and young
people, involves mass media, community/group media and processes, as
well as IPC/C, involving the primary audience whose behaviour is
measured and those who influence that behaviour in the family and
community.
Social mobilisation is a cross
cutting strategy, involving intersectoral collaboration and capacity
building from the state to the community level, aimed at social change.
Avert has developed an implementation plan which has been
operational with JHU/HCP providing technical support for communication
programming including implementation of activities.

MSRTC Buses
The MSRTC buses were fully painted with the messages of Prevention of
HIV/AIDS by following the A & B approach in 2006. This activity
continued for six months. After six months, there was an evaluation
study on the fully painted buses. This study further recommended the
painting of buses and stressing the need on the buses which are
traveling in the interior areas. As a matter of fact, the MSRTC buses
(City & Mofussil buses Total No. 183) were fully painted with the
Youth Campaign Jawan Hoon Nadan Nahin messages. In this phase,
the buses traveling in the rural areas are painted more in numbers than
the buses in the City. These fully painted buses are in Satara, Sangli,
Solapur, Nagpur, Aurangabad, Mumbai & Thane covering all six Avert
districts.
