Prevention
To provide quality and availability of prevention services
Considering the face of the epidemic in Maharashtra, Avert
Society has prioritized the availability of quality prevention
services to the vulnerable groups. The primary focus is to
approach the high-risk groups in 7 districts with a high prevalence
of HIV. The districts are: Sangli, Satara, Sholapur, Nagpur,
Aurangabad, Thane and Mumbai. In Mumbai Avert has a thematic
understanding with MDACS. MDACS focuses on brothel based sex
workers, truckers etc. in the city of Mumbai. Avert Society
focuses on non brothel based sex workers, slum population,
Men who have Sex with Men (MSM), Intravenous Drug Users (IDU)
etc. To reach out to the workforce Avert is implementing a
state level Workplace Intervention (WPI) program including
engagement of the private sector.
Targeted Intervention
Avert Society is implementing targeted intervention
activities among sex workers, truckers, MSM, IDU and
slum population. The activities are implemented through
NGOs and CBOs. Prevention activities focuses on abstinence,
be faithful and condoms. According to the risk of the
population Targeted Interventions aim at behaviour change
among individuals towards lower risk of HIV/AIDS and
Sexually Transmitted Infections.
Activities till date
- 34 NGO projects implementing targeting
intervention programs among sex workers - 5, Truckers - 4, MSM - 3,
Prisoners -1, Slum population - 9, Migrant laborers - 7, comprehensive
prevention & Care - 1, Youth - 2 and Street Children - 2.
- 7 lakh population covered in last 3 years by Avert
Society with this programme of making prevention services
available and bringing about behavioral change among
the groups at risk.
- Monitoring and Evaluation of NGO project activities.
Future Activities:
- Scaling up of TI activities among existing programs
- Initiating interventions with Men Having Sex with
Men (MSM)
- Widening the reach through more number of programs
for truckers
- Initiating PLWHA involvement in Prevention activities.

Work Place Intervention
Avert Society is implementing Workplace Intervention
on HIV/AIDS using a three pronged approach:
- Establish a sound Workplace Policy and prevention
and care programme for the employees, their families
and communities.
- Initiatives in the community – contribute to activities
to HIV/AIDS beyond the Workplace.
- Advocacy – on a company-to-company basis or advocacy
with other sectors.
Activities
- Collaboration with BCCI and CII to reach a large
network of individuals with prevention and care &
support services.
- Collaboration with BPCL to implement workplace HIV
prevention activities among the workers.
Workplace intervention programs are implemented through
out the state of Maharashtra. Private sector is also
engaged in the workplace intervention programs.
