Research Program
Maharashtra has developed an agenda for carrying out research
activities that support the HIV prevention efforts. A joint
meeting of experts was held in Pune to identify various priorities
in basic, clinical and social sciences.
To assess the impact of interventions, Avert conducts annually
a Behavioral Surveillance Survey (BSS) among the high risk
groups. A Health Care Provider Survey is carried out to asses
the quality of STI treatment services provided. Formative
research studies include Mapping of High Risk Groups and needs
assessment studies for various activities.
Avert Society works in close co-ordination with Government
of Maharashtra, NACO, USAID, MSACS, MDACS, and NGOs in conducting
of research activities.
Activities undertaken
Five Preparatory Studies were undertaken to provide inputs
to the strategic planning for the Avert project. These studies
included the following:
- Mapping of commercial
sex access points and relevant service outlets in Maharashtra.
- Behavioural Surveillance
Survey (BSS) in Maharashtra (Baseline Wave).

Condom Market: Product Quality and Supply Study.

access points, risk behaviours of the key target groups, the
quality of STI/HIV health care facilities, condom supply and
communication needs of the people.
Other Studies Undertaken:
- High risk group Mapping study in 22 districts of Maharashtra.
